Though snow signifies the beginning of the wonderful season of Winter and Christmas, it means extremely harsh and gruesome climates for those who are homeless. During Winter, Chicago averages a temperature between 30-38 degrees Fahrenheit, which is freezing weather. The homeless population of Chicago has to deal with this harsh climate for the entire Winter, which burdens them with a plethora of other problems including frostbite.
Frostbite is extremely possible of occurring in Chicago's homeless population as temperatures can soar as low as -12 degrees Fahrenheit as it did in 2019. Hypothermia, frostbite, and respiratory illness are all the main concerns of the homeless in Chicago during winter. Frostbite could possibly lead to amputation, which would completely ruin the life of the person at hand. It would make their terrible situation even worse.
Shoes prevent frostbite as they provide warmth. The stability that having good winter shoes provides for homeless people is vital to their progress towards financial stability.
